Why are my forums missing?

Many of our old forum users are signing in to find that their forums are missing. Some time last week, a catastrophic hardware failure caused the loss of our forum databases. Initially thinking we could rely on our backup data, the drive crash had corrupted our backup data over time to the point it was unusable. Unfortunately, we cannot recover your forums or posts from Board Zero 2.0. For that we are truly sorry, many great forums were lost. However, many of our larger forums have recovered, and have rebounded.

The Upgrade to phpBB3

Despite the outage, we worked around the clock from the crash last week and used this opportunity to upgrade our system to the phpBB3 framework. We are also on a completely upgraded server, new IP and new system. We also have a massively improved security system.

Will this happen again?

We have learnt much from this catastrophe and have put various measures in place to stop and recover in such scenarios. Our main database is hosted on a fresh RAID array, our first tier of backups are run nightly, onto the RAID array. We have a 2nd tier of backups onto separate drives, also run nightly. Our 3rd tier of backups are then sent to a remote server in New York. We have daily backup retention up to a month, and monthly backup retention up to a year. In case of a drive crash, we can re-image the RAID array with little downtime and no loss of data, in case of deletion, we can selectively restore data.

8x 3.0ghz Logical Processor Intel Xeon Setup
Critical and forum data is hosted in a RAID array, with multiple backup tiers
Our new server is constantly being tweaked for performance and security, barring unforeseen circumstances, there will be very little downtime, if any for the vast majority of time.
